TO SET

Es un verbo muy versátil. En general significa PONER, COLOCAR. Los ingleses lo usan mucho

•  Poner en hora: I'm going to SET the alarm (clock) FOR six o'clock

                          What time are you going to SET  your alarm FOR?
                          What time SHALL I SET the alarm FOR?

• Montar un negocio: SET UP

                          I want to SET UP a bussiness. I want to set IT up in Madrid.

• Ponerse (el sol): SET/RISE

                         The sun RISES  /raisis/ in the morning and SETS/goes down at night
                         What a beautiful sunset!
                         *sunrises/dawn (amanecer) - sunset/dusk (crepúsculo, atardecer)
                         I love when the sun sets later and later (cada vez más tarde) and the days get longer and longer

• -Salir de viaje: TO SET OFF

                          I want to SET OFF before sunrise.
                          There's goin g to have a lot of traffic. That's way (por eso) I want to SET OFF early
                           On the one hand, if we go to bed early, we can set off early/first thing (a primera hora) in the morning; on the other hand, if we go to bed early, we'll miss tonight's film.

•  Colocar algo sobre: TO SET DOWN = TO PUT
• Poner una trampa: TO SET A TRAP. Has they set the mouse traps yet?
• Poner deberes: TO SET/GIVE homework
• Poner exámenes: TO SET exams
• Poner el horno: TO SET the oven. I've set the oven AT 310 degrees
• Ser un ejemplo : TO SET A GOOD/BAD example. You have to SET a good example TO your little brother
• Estar preparado: On your markets, GET SET, go!
• Fijar un plazo. TO SET DEADLINES. (TO MISS/DON'T KEEO = no cumplirlas)
• They set deadlines but never keep them
• He's a procastinator and if you set a deadline he won't be ABLE to meet (cumplir) it.
• Fijar un día: TO SET A DAY: We need to SET a day and a time to discuss the new project
• Fijar una fecha: TO SET A DAY. Have they to SET a date for their wedding yet?
• Fijar un precio: to SET A PRICE. Has he set a price ON his flat yet? I'd like to buy it.
• Fijar un presupuesto: TO SET A BUDGET. When you set a budget, it's important to stick (respetarlo) to it.
• Estar ambientado (una película o una novela) en TO BE SET/TAKE PLACE

• The film IS SET in 1967. It is set in Paris
• the film was SET to music BY The Doors (El grupo The Doors puso música a la película)
• This novel IS SET under the ocean

Pero este verbo también es un SUSTANTIVO muy utilizado.

• Juego de...(cubertería, mantelería...) a SETS of CUTLERY
• Colección de libros, discos... A SET of books, DVDs... 
• Can you lend me this box set of DVDs of thr fourth season of Lost?
• Decorado o plató de cine o TV: He lives his whole life as if he were being filmed on a TV SET.

Incluso tiene un valor como ADJETIVO. Entonces significa fijo, establecido, prescrito

• You can come whenever you want; there are no SET DAYS for visiting
• It will be much cheaper if we get the SET menu. (menú del día)
• There are SET  prices
